Kris Mayes holds an undergraduate degree from Arizona State University, a Master of Public Administration from Columbia University, and a law degree from ASU's Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law. A former political reporter, she served as press secretary to Governor Janet Napolitano and spent nearly a decade on the Arizona Corporation Commission, the state's utility regulator, before becoming Arizona Attorney General in 2023. As attorney general she has prioritized consumer protection, reproductive rights, water and utility regulation, and combating fraud.
